What do we treat?
Older Adults' Rehabilitation and Healthy Ageing
In a Cochrane review (2009) results show that multiple-component group exercise reduced the rate of falls and risk of falling in older adults in the community. Individually prescribed multiple-component home-based exercise also reduced both rate and risk of falls in the same population.
The top intrinsic risk factors for falls in the older adult are muscle weakness, a history of falls and gait and balance deficits. These are aspects that physiotherapists can assess and treat.
PhysioElite can individually assess older adults and screen them for falls and balance deficits with a subsequent programme to improve their mobility and falls risk. Alternatively, we offer a balance and strengthening class weekly for over 60s. Our AgeWell class is led by our chartered physiotherapist and involves pre- and post-testing along with weekly education sessions on healthy ageing. All of the employees at the clinic have previous experience in the area of group exercise for the elderly while our chartered physiotherapist Tricia currently works in an older person service in the HSE and has completed several post graduate courses in this area.
