What do we treat?
Care of the Elderly

Approximately 30% of people over 65 years of age living in the community fall each year (Gillespie et al 2009). Between 250 and 280 of these falls result in death and by the year 2031, 600+ falls will result in death.
In the latest Cochrane review (2009) results show that multiple-component group exercise reduced the rate of falls and risk of falling in elderly people in the community. Individually prescribed multiple-component home-based exercise also reduced both rate and risk of falls in the same population.
The top intrinsic risk factors for falls in the elderly are muscle weakness, a history of falls and gait and balance deficits. These are aspects that physiotherapists can assess and treat.
PhysioElite can individually assess elderly patients and screen them for falls and balance deficits and, should there be enough interest, the clinic is currently attempting to set up a falls prevention class in the community. This would involve aerobic conditioning, strengthening, balance training and flexibility exercises not to mention the social benefits for the participants. All of the employees at the clinic have previous experience in the area of group exercise for the elderly while our chartered physiotherapist has worked on an individual and group basis in the geriatric setting.
